Back home in Manchester, five piece neo post-punk band Cabbage put on one hell of a performance for all their local fans at Academy 2 on Friday. With support from Charlie Potatoes and Rory Wynne the night was bound to be a hit.

Described as “Manchester’s most exciting new band”, Cabbage have a sound similar to that of Fat White Family and the early Sex Pistols with a bit of Manchester uproar thrown in there as well - loud, unique and intense. It was simply a top class night and definitely not a gig for the faint hearted. Since the release of their first single in 2014 the band have come a long way, and have brought out several EPs in the past year before releasing their first album in January. It’s strange to think that Cabbage could become the next huge act coming out of Manchester. Following in the footsteps of Joy Division, The Stone Roses and all the other amazing acts from the fab city I don’t doubt that Cabbage will be up there with the best of them in no time. Opening with “Uber Capitalist Death Trade” - the first song off their debut album “Young Dumb and Full Of…” – Cabbage set the night rolling with an instantly identifiable and intense riff. This just made the crowd go wild, everyone was having a blast and the beer was flying everywhere right from the start of the night up til the very end. Having just released their first album (and a special edition vinyl pressing for Record Store Day earlier this month) Cabbage fans everywhere were buzzed to see them perform, especially in their hometown, so you can imagine the excitement filling the atmosphere as they entered onto the stage. The new album is full of politically fuelled tracks scrutinising Donald Trump, The NHS, The Royal Family and Kim Jong-un – to name a few familiar faces. Their set was jam packed with fan favourites - but then again everything is a fan favourite – and there wasn’t one dull moment, songs such as “Terrorist Synthesiser” and “Dinner Lady” are classics of the bands harsh and political image, where as “Grim Up North Korea” and “Because You’re Worth It” add more depth to their sound with a slower tempo and have an added affect of giving the sweat coated fans a chance to cool off, the band even introduced the fans to an all new song which is a certain future hit. All in all, I think every single person in the sold out venue didn’t want the unbelievable night to come to an end.

Cabbage are definitely a must see band, their performance was impeccable and their brilliant music isn’t something to miss out on. I would highly recommend you look them up and purchase their new album as soon as you can, I predict they will be one of the next bands to make it big since there really isn’t anyone else like them. You can find Cabbage next at “Festevol Gardens” Liverpool on 30th April, as well as at many other upcoming venues in the UK over the next few months (Find more information here). Cabbage come back to Manchester for “Parklife Festival” on 10th June and on 1st July at the Ritz with support from The Blinders and Strange Bones, an unmissable line up. You will be seeing and hearing more about Cabbage in the future, from me and from others, as they have been growing in popularity at an exponential rate and it’s not going to be stopping anytime soon.
