Jaws are an indie pop band based in Birmingham. Since their formation in 2012 they have gained a significant fan base throughout the UK and they are currently touring, following the release of their second album “Simplicity”, with support act Kagoule. On Tuesday, Jaws played a sold out gig at Manchester’s Club Academy.

The show was opened by three piece support band Kagoule. The Nottingham based alternative rock group have a great image and I really liked that they had a female bass player. The band has undeniable chemistry when performing and I feel they kicked off the gig with some top tunes. Their 2016 singles, “Magnified” and “Pharmacy” are worth a listen, along with their 2015 album “Urth”. Their sound is pretty heavy with a slight psychedelic hint to their music, I hope to hear more coming from them soon. You can catch Kagoule next at “Handmade Festival”, Leicester on 28th April, at “Night And Day Café”, Manchester on 13th May and at “Gold Sounds Festival”, Leeds on 20th May.

By the time Jaws took to the stage, at around 9pm, the crowd were buzzed. The trio opened with one of their most recent hits “Just a Boy”, the 2016 single is a definite start to the band heading in a more sophisticated direction. The whole album, “Simplicity”, differs from previous releases. Many of the tracks on the newest album have more of a bite to their sound; where as in the past, tracks have often been slower and easier listening. In contrast to their 2014 album “Be Slowly” many of the lyrics on Jaws newest album are deeper, they more often discuss growing up from a more mature perspective when compared to their older tracks which articulate feelings of love with a more youthful outlook and pop like vibe. Not to mention, the new album really does contain a great musical variety and I’m loving the more complex riffs the band are producing, it definitely adds depth to their sound and creates a great atmosphere when performing live. I think beginning with “Just a Boy” was a great start to the gig, as the opening sequence of the song is gripping and the audience were eager for more. The bands entire set was full of top tracks and the crowd loved every second of it, slower songs were incorporated into the mostly up beat listing, giving the crowd a chance to calm down and have a bit of a breather. Jaws closed their set with an old fan favourite, “Gold”; the highly energised track ended the night on a positive note and had a clear impact on all the overjoyed fans leaving the venue.

Definitely a night that will stand out for many and Jaws really aren’t a band to miss, their sold out gig and great fan base just shows how far they’ve come and I sure they can make it quite a lot further. See Jaws at their upcoming events in Oxford, Newcastle, Leeds and Leicester, as well as at “Truck Festival” and “Y Not Festival”, (*details will be linked below). But I'd be quick as tickets are going to sell out fast.
